The first step in creating a website is to register a domain name. On average, a domain name costs around $7 to $12 per year. Depending upon the type of company you are operating, you may be able to get a domain name for free.
Non-Profit Organization

As a "Non-Profit" organization, your company is not in business to make money. Instead, it is in business to provide services and resources to others. As an expression of appreciation for your efforts, some companies will also assist you. Find a web services provider, such as GrassRoots, that offer free domain names and other web services to non-profit organizations. Depending upon the web services company, you may be required to provide proof of your Non-Profit status. Generally, a 501c3 tax exemption form from the Internal Revenue Service is sufficient proof.

If you intend to develop your domain name into a full-fledged website, sign up for web hosting services. Many web hosting companies provide you with a free domain name if you purchase a web hosting package. In some cases, the domain is free for a limited time. Some companies offer free domain names for a lifetime, as long as you continue to use its hosting services. The downside of getting a free domain name using this method, is that you might lose the domain name if you ever cancel your hosting subscription. This protocol varies by company. For that reason, read the company's terms of agreement thoroughly before getting the domain name.
Write It Off On Taxes

When you operate a business, certain expenses are deductible on your tax return. Expenses for your website are included in these deductible expenses. If you use this method, you must purchase your domain name upfront. You then report the expense on your tax return at the end of the tax year. If you own a company that is a franchise of a major chain, or if you are an independent contractor of the chain, contact the companies corporate office to discuss a free website. For instance, if your business is selling Avon, you are assigned a free domain name to promote and sell your products. If you receive a free domain name using this method, it may be a "sub-domain name." A sub-domain name is a website address that is connected to the main company's website address. For instance, your address may appear as "http://www.thecorporateoffice.com/yourname" instead of "http://www.yourcompanyname.com."

Face-off at Free State University

Chaos broke out at the University of the Free State's Bloemfontein campus on Wednesday, after about 800 people - believed to be mostly ANCYL members - stormed the main building.

The group, who had been bussed in to the campus, protested against the fact that no political activities by outside groups will be allowed on the campus during the university's SRC elections.

They also demanded that the rector, Professor Jonathan Jansen, be fired.

Free State chair of Sasco (SA Student Congress) Manyene Lesapo said: "He [Jansen] has burned political structures on campus."

Calling him a "coconut", they bemoaned the fact that they had co-operated with him in the past.

Police intervened when white students and protesters, armed with sticks and stones and singing Kill the boer, faced off over pamphlets that the group had scattered all over the campus.

The white students were stopped from cleaning up the pamphlets strewn in front of the main building.

Free State ANC Youth League chair, Kgotso Morapela, leading the protest, at one stage had to calm a small group of protesters after being interrupted with "Ag shurrup" (Oh shut up), shouted by a student looking on.

Moments before the interruption, Morapela acknowledged the protest was illegal.

Thuggish behaviour

Jansen said the university was worried about "thuggish behaviour" by outside groups invading the campus.

"An urgent interdict has been obtained and any further invasions by outside groups will lead to arrest."

Dean of students Rudi Buys said the election for a student representative council continues.

Buys said lectures were not interrupted by the fracas.

"Everything continues as normal."

The university said police had arrested about 150 people.

Approached for comment, two students said they were not sure what was going on.

"Those people, we do not know them," they said, adding "They do not belong here."

They felt the new SRC election process had been "fine" and "fair".

Another student felt Jansen had done his best to get rid of racism and sort out "political activism".

He said before Jansen arrived there was constant trouble at Kovsies.

“Now these things happen. This is tragic,” he said, adding that he did not know any of the protesters.

Sonic Free Riders [Xbox 360 Game]

Tax Free Weekend starts today

Shoppers can break out their wallets without breaking the bank this weekend.

Over the course of three days each summer, Texas shoppers get a rare chance to shop without having to pay the usual 8.25 percent sales tax on many clothing and school supply items.

The state's annual tax holiday usually falls the weekend before school starts, just in time for parents buying those last minute back to school items. As long as items on the state's approved list are priced $100 or less, there is no tax assessed.

In essence, this break can save shoppers around $8 for every $100 spent.

Many Huntsville retailers are gearing up for a busy weekend, with many extending store hours to accommodate shoppers.

Mike Elder, manager of JC Penney in Huntsville, said tax free weekend is rivaled only by Black Friday in terms of foot traffic. The store will stay open until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday night.

“It's a lot busier for us than a normal weekend,” he said. “It's probably two and a half times busier. We do extend our hours.”

In the Ravenwood Village shopping center, Target is also preparing for a crush of shoppers. Senior team leader Jon Mitchell said the holiday also falls on back-to-college week for the store.

“There's already an increase in sales over the week and we expect more of an increase over the weekend,” he said. “We always have weekly specials.”

Taxed items include, but are not limited to: barrettes, ponytail holders, hair accessories, wallets, watches, baseball and other sports cleats, belt buckles without belts, buttons and zippers, cloth and lace, football pants, golf gloves, handbags and purses, handkerchiefs and jewelry.

Palace museum responds to latest cover-up

A palace museum spokesperson said an investigation was underway into an allegation that the museum had covered up four major relics damage accidents following a previous admission that a researcher had broken a masterpiece.

A researcher accidently damaged a rare thousand-year porcelain dish in the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City, the museum reported on July 31.

On August 2, "Longcan," the whistleblower who first made the accident public, said in his personal blog that the museum had covered up four major relics damage accidents in recent years.

Following Longcan's allegation, Xinhua called museum spokesperson Feng Nai'en on Friday. Feng said, "We are losing no time in verifying the allegation, and I will brief you if there are any new developments."

In a telephone interview with Chen Lihua, vice curator of the museum in charge of relics and research, Chen said, "I will not answer this question. I am not in a position to make comments, hope you understand. The museum now has a spokesperson, and you could ask him instead."

The state's top-level celadon-glazed dish, a masterpiece of Ge kiln porcelain from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was shattered into six parts after a testing instrument was incorrectly operated by a researcher, according to an investigation conducted by the museum after the accident.

Hotpot hospitality good lesson for city officials

A 28-member team of officials visited a hotpot restaurant in Nanjing city in East China's Jiangsu province on Tuesday not for the delicious Chinese food, but to learn how to serve people better, the xhby.net reported Friday.

The hotpot restaurant, as a branch outlet of the popular Sichuan Haidilao Catering Co Ltd, which has a nationwide reputation for high-quality and hospitable service, is used to visitors who want to expand their experience and management skills, but it was its first time to receive visitors as special as this official team from Yangzhou city of Jiangsu province, headed by Wu Xiao'an, the head of urban management for Yangzhou city.

The visit to the restaurant was inspired by a case study of employee management at Haidilao published in a Chinese edition of the Harvard Business Review in 2009. The secretary of the CPC Yangzhou municipal committee, Wang Yanwen, forwarded the case study to Wu on July 26 and suggested he attempt a similar learning experience at Haidilao.

The officials spent four hours in the Haidialao outlet and were impressed with the restaurant's treatment of its employees, noting they treated them like the family members by renting housing for them, hiring nannies and providing four free meals each day, among other things.

Such good treatment motivated the employees to serve the customers with sincere smiles and hospitalities, which came from the bottom of their hearts.

"It is hard to learn the heart-to-heart way they serve, but we have to learn," said Wu.

The experience prompted an urban management officers' self-rethinking of urban management, Wu added. While the learning visit also reminded another urban management official that many conflicts could have be avoided if local enforcement staff could think about the street vendors in the same way the Haidilao employees do to their customers.

Wu also invited Haidilao's founder to Yangzhou to have a discussion about the management.

In recent years, the urban management officers have been notorious across the country for their cruel and violent enforcement of rules relating to street vendors.

South China region powering up

"About 90 percent of the toymakers here are involved in low-cost manufacturing. But we are part of the remaining 10 percent that deal with innovation and high technology," says Hu, head of the PP Bear Industry Investment Co Ltd.

Hu's bears, which interact with children by imitating human expressions, have proven to be a hit with Chinese consumers. The company raked in more than 20 million yuan (2.2 million euros) in one year and sold up to 300,000 of the bears in 2008 alone, when other toymakers in the area in Guangdong province were facing tough times. US entertainment giant Disney even approached her for opportunities to work together but she refused, Hu says.

"We knew we had to create a niche for ourselves and have a brand of our own, if we wanted to stay competitive and be higher up on the value chain," says Hu, who is also vice-president of the Shenzhen Toys Industry Association. Her company now holds more than 20 patents, including a crucial one for the microchip that controls her bears' actions. Hu employs about 20 people to design, research and market her bears, outsourcing production to factories in the region instead.

"We are 'created in China', not just 'made in China'. It's a matter of using your brain and not just relying on manual labor," she says.

Hu is an example of what authorities and businesses are offering as a solution to the challenges facing Guangdong's Pearl River Delta region (PRD). The PRD's low-cost, labor-intensive and export-oriented manufacturing in industries such as textile, toys, electronics and plastics has made it an engine of China's economic growth in the past three decades. Toy industry figures alone show that, together with related Hong Kong players, the region's toymakers account for more than 70 percent of global toy production.

Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, became a special economic zone following the country's reform and opening-up in the late 1970s. Zhuhai, a coastal city in southern Guangdong that borders Macao, and Shantou in the eastern part of the province also became special economic zones.

Boosted by other industrial cities such as Foshan, Zhongshan and Dongguan, the PRD has become the powerhouse of the Chinese economy. The country's largest export hub, accounting for more than one-quarter of the national total trade volume, also hit a population of 104 million last November, based on latest census figures.

Guangdong achieved annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth of more than 10 percent for the past three decades. The province recorded 4.5 trillion yuan in GDP last year, 11 percent of the country's 39.8 trillion yuan GDP, official statistics show.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) implemented in Guangdong hit $21 billion (14.8 billion euros) last year, up by 3.7 percent from the previous year's figure, statistics from the Ministry of Commerce show. The FDI in Guangdong made up nearly one-fifth of that implemented in the country last year, ministry figures show.

But the factors behind that economic success have also fueled concerns that the PRD now needs to upgrade to survive the next stage of development.

Fail to earn those tips and you lose a star.  Lose all your stars and the game is over.
